This presentation describes the design, synthesis, and study of composite sulfur-containing nanoparticles having porous gold-coated shells for use in lithium-sulfur battery applications.  These porous gold-coated shells were synthesized via the conversion of the Au and Ag alloy coating to a thin porous gold shell.  Controlling the percentage of silver in the alloy coatings allows for tuning the pore size in the gold shell, giving rise to a thin mesoporous gold coating.  Separately, the presence of a gold shell, which can act as an electrocatalyst, can potentially solve pore-clogging problems that plague related nanoscale lithium-sulfur battery architectures.  The aforementioned features make our new composite nanoparticles excellent candidates for lithium-sulfur battery applications.
