This presentation details the preparation and characterization of hollow gold-silver nanoshell particles coated with a thin silica shells.  Gold-silver nanoshells were synthesized via galvanic replacement.  Varying concentrations of (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and sodium silicate solution afforded silica shell coatings of controllable thicknesses on gold-silver nanoshells.  Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectra and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful coating of the gold-silver nanoshells with silica.  Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicated that two different thicknesses of silica shell (~2 nm and ~10 nm) were achieved using this method.  Extinction spectra of the as-prepared nanoparticles indicate that the silica shell has a minimal effect on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of the gold-silver nanoshells.
