Layered van der Waals materials such as graphene, hexagonal-boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides have received widespread attention due to the exotic physical and chemical properties that arise when their charges, spins, and vibrations are confined to a plane. These atomic two-dimensional (2D) materials can be effectively modified by chemical doping to tailor their properties; however, there are various limitations to doping these materials owing to the lack of chemical handles on their surfaces. Here, I present the synthesis and properties of semiconducting Chevrel-type, layered molecular clusters of molybdenum and rhenium chalcohalides. The cluster networks exhibit strong in-plane bonding and weak van der Waals interactions between the layers enabling mechanical or chemical exfoliation into thinner layers. The surface of these 2D materials inherently bears halide groups that allow for chemical substitutions with a variety of chemical functional groups. Moreover, I describe the potential applications of these cluster-based 2D materials by investigating their conductive, thermoelectric, and photoluminescent properties.
