The last decade has seen a vast increase in studies using XPS under near-ambient pressure conditions due to advances in the design of differentially pumped electron analysers. Both synchrotron and laboratory-based instruments can now routinely measure XP spectra in the mbar range.<br/>The first part of the talk will discuss problems and key design features specific to the study of heterogeneous catalysts (model and industrial). The second part will report results of recent studies on model catalysts for hydrogenation and oxidation reactions. Amongst other examples, I will discuss the influence of reactants and solvents on modifier molecules used in enantioselective heterogeneous catalysis and the influence of the catalyst’s oxidation state on the selectivity in the oxidation of methane. These experiments show remarkable differences, both between near-ambient-pressure and UHV and between nanoparticles and single/poly crystals.
