Molecular spectroscopy techniques have played a crucial role for researchers working in the field of bioorganometallic chemistry. Many bioorganometallic molecules contain metal carbonyl tag groups and infrared (IR) spectroscopy has been particularly useful in detecting the presence of these groups. There has also been some fascinating metal carbonyl imaging work on biological molecules using AFM-IR, a technique which makes use of an atomic force microscope (AFM) coupled to a tunable pulsed IR laser. More recently, Raman spectroscopy has come into play, particularly with some important surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) investigations. In this paper, we will discuss some of the recent uses of IR and Raman spectroscopy in bioorganometallic carbonyl chemistry.
