Fabrication of monolayer graphene in 2004 has opened a new rapidly burgeoning area of research, which is often called as valleytronics or spintronics. In spintronics and valleytronics devices, we harness the spin and valley degrees of freedom of electrons, respectively. In the last 5 years, there has been amazing development in the synthesis and characterization of novel graphene-based devices from both theoretical and experimental side. In addition to graphene, another class of materials, known as transition-metal-dichalcogenides (TMDCs), have attracted wide attention of researchers due to their unique optoelectronics properties. The Van der waals heterostructures of graphene and TMDCs exhibit even more interesting properties than that of a monolayer graphene. In this talk, I will talk about the electronic properties of some graphene-based novel heterostructures, which can have potential applications in the spintronics technology. Moreover, I will discuss the electronic properties of some other two-dimensional systems, other than graphene, which exhibit intriguing electronic properties and can have potential applications in the future spintronics and optoelectronics devices. The major possible applications include the spin-field-effect transistors, detections for long-sought Majorana fermions, advanced sensors and optoelectronics devices.
