Rare-earth doped cerium oxides synthesized using a combustion method were prepared as a support for a copper-ceria system for the preferential CO oxidation (CO PROX) in H2-rich streams. The effect of dopants, such as La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Tb in ceria support on the copper-ceria system were demonstrated in an industrial CO PROX reactant mixture simultaneously containing CO2 and H2O. Several characterizations of the prepared catalysts in terms of physical, structural and redox properties were performed using N2-isotherms, XRD, Raman, TEM and H2-TPR analyses. The introduction of the rare-earth dopants in ceria support showed a dramatic effect on the reducibility of the catalysts and on the interaction between copper and surface ceria. Consequently, this effect was presented on the CO PROX activity and selectivity, indicating that even a little amount of dopants in ceria could affect to the catalysis on the surface of the mixed metal oxide system. Moreover, the selected catalysts were demonstrated for the long-term experiments under the reactant mixture containing high CO2 and H2O concentration, which derived from the industrial diesel reformers, to investigate commercial possibilities of the catalysts.
