Lithium protection has been a topic of research for some time now. Various attempts have been made to allow for high-efficiency, safe operation of cells with Li metal anodes, including use of electrolyte additives including salts and solvent to enhance SEI properties, as well as coating anodes using atomic layer deposition or other methods. However, such methods have consistently failed to provide adequate efficiency over long cycling and to prevent failure due to dendrite growth.<br/>This talk will present a novel interfacial inorganic-organic hybrid ion conductor as a protective layer for lithium metal anodes, enabling the development of safe, high-performance Li metal batteries. A composite of several purpose-made hybrid polymers with components that are flexible, dense, mechanically optimized, Li ion conductive, and otherwise critical will be developed which will have high ionic conductivity, excellent chemical and electrochemical stability at the anode, and a robust and flexible interface capable of preventing shorting by dendrite growth and promoting high-efficiency Li deposition/dissolution. Compared to current protective coating layer techniques, this method provides a general approach to tune and optimize the Li- electrolyte interphase structure, leading to a high coulombic efficiency and stable Li deposition/ stripping morphology.<br/>
