Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for elucidating the complex chemical, structural, and electronic changes that rechargeable battery materials undergo upon electrochemical cycling. Applications of advanced NMR methods to battery materials will be discussed, including multi-dimensional through-bond and through-space correlation experiments, diffusion and imaging measurements, and relaxation analyses. Emphasis will be placed on how NMR techniques provide highly complementary information to other common characterization techniques (e.g., diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, etc.). Specific examples will be presented that illustrate how cutting-edge NMR methods have been used to (i) establish chemical and electronic disorder in crystalline Li-ion intercalation compounds, as well as (ii) quantify ion transport properties in polymer electrolyte and solid electrode materials. For such cases, molecular-level insights revealed by NMR suggest rational design strategies aimed at designing battery materials with enhanced electrochemical properties.
