Mesoporous zeolites have gained great interest in the last decade because of their short diffusion path length and better catalytic performance. As a new high-silica zeolite, IM-5 zeolite has excellently high thermal and hydrothermal stability, which is even better than that of ZSM-5. However, because of the microporous structure of IM-5 zeolite, diffusion limitations are main drawbacks, which stem from the slow intra-crystalline transport of large molecules, induce fast catalyst deactivation. In this work, we would like to report the first example of mesoporous IM-5 zeolite which is obtained by alkali treatment, the structural and catalytic properties are studied. In this processing of desilication, some siliceous species was selectively dissolved from the framework of zeolite, leading to formmation mesopores and the decrease of Si/Al ratio. Under optimal conditions, the mesopore volume of the treated IM-5 zeolite reached to 0.311cm3/g, meanwhile the micropore volume were 0.125 cm3/g, which meant that its microporous structural was well preserved. The mesoporous IM-5 zeolite showed higher propylene selectivity in the catalytic cracking reaction of n-octane due to its short diffusion path length and proper acidity properties.
