The quality of air in a built environment has an important impact on the health and well-being of the occupants as people spend most of their time indoor. Indoor air often has high levels of particulate matter as well as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and malodorants. Many of these compounds are known endocrine disruptors and some are suspected carcinogens putting pregnant women, children and elderly at a greater risk. Currently, the treatment of VOCs and malodorants often relies on adsorption process with activated carbons, charcoals and molecular sieves, while particulate matter is captured by high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) air filters.<br/><br/>Here we develop a high performance air purification technology based on supported ionic liquids on commercial air filtration media for one-step removal of indoor air pollutants including VOCs, malodorants and particulate matter. Supported ionic liquids exhibit more than 20% higher sorption capacities for VOCs and malodorants than traditional adsorbents, and comparable filtration efficiencies for inorganic particulate matter with HEPA filters without increased air flow resistance.
