With increasing level of global emission of CO2, conversion of CO2 into platform chemicals has attracted a lot of attentions. For example, hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol is widely studied using supported Cu catalysts on ZnO, ZrO2 etc. The interfaces of Cu/ZnO and Cu/ZrO2 play vital roles in the catalysis. Surface structural reorganization and particle growth during catalysis deleteriously reduce these active interfaces, diminishing both catalytic activities and MeOH selectivities. In this talk, I will present the use of pre-assembled bpy and Zr6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4 sites in UiO-bpy metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to anchor ultrasmall Cu/ZnOx nanoparticles that are protected from agglomeration or phase separation, leading to 100% selectivity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol and high stability over 100 hours. Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 is another attractive way for CO2 conversion. In this talk, I will present our study of (bpy)Re(CO)3Cl catalyst by immobilizing them in MOFs as effective single-site catalyst to photochemically reduce CO2 to carbon monoxide and formate. The site isolation in MOFs provides mechanistic insights into the photocatalytic CO2 reduction process. Furthermore, the energy transfer process is also important in photocatalysis. We have carried out a series of studies on energy transfer in MOFs which are also included in the talk.
