Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) is a student-centered, team-learning pedagogy based on research on how students learn. In a POGIL classroom, students work in self-managed teams of three or four using specially designed learning materials that guide them through a cycle of exploration, concept invention, and application to develop key course concepts. At the same time, the POGIL approach intentionally focusses on the development of process skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. The instructor serves as a facilitator rather than a lecturer, assisting the student teams in the discovery process. POGIL has been successfully implemented in many hundreds of high school and college classrooms across the country and around the world – and at essentially all levels throughout the undergradaute curriculum. The POGIL Project is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support the development, implementation, and study of student-centered pedagogies. The POGIL Project supports and disseminates POGIL learing materials and also provides professional development opportunities for high school and post-secondary instructors interested in learning about POGIL pedagogy. This presentation will provide an introduction to the principles of POGIL and will also describe the ongoing efforts of The POGIL Project.
