1,2,4-Oxadiazoles are a privileged scaffold with a variety of medicinal applications. These compounds have been developed as antibiotics, anti-cancer agents, antidiabetics, and neuroprotective agents. They have also found use within material science as liquid crystals, ionic liquids, and light-emitting devices. The research described herein focuses on the synthesis and characterization of several examples of these compounds via a one-step cyclization between an amidoximine and ester. Additionally, the antibacterial properties of these compounds will be explored and issues of drug-design (step count, purity, solubility, etc.) will be discussed. Finally, the applicability of this experimental design to be included within the undergraduate curriculum will be explored.
