The increased use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in everyday materials has raised concerns of soil and water pollution, and possible toxicity. In this study, the effect of exposure to AuNPs of varying sizes on the lifespan of the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was investigated. AuNPs of 5, 20, 50, and 80-nm sizes were synthesized using citrate-reduction methods and analyzed to determine size and dispersity using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Synthesis methods were tested and altered to produce monodispersed AuNPs of the desired size. The C. elegans were exposed to medium containing AuNPs of different sizes and observed for changes in lifespan compared to the control group.
