The ability to control the interfacial properties of materials, such as inorganic oxide surfaces, has a profound effect on resulting applications, such as lubrication, hydrophobicity and anti-bacterial growth. While silicones are widely used for a number of these applications, many of the advantages of these materials are overlooked. Herein, we discuss a simple method for the conformal modification of inorganic surfaces using low-molecular weight polysiloxane monomers. Furthermore, we explore the anti-bacterial and biofilm growth properties of silicone and silicone hybrid coatings on these materials. Finally, the use of silicones as alternatives and replacements of traditional oil paints for artistic media is also examined.
