Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) is an important analytical separation technique that uses the fact that substances move through an electric field at different velocities to separate a mixture based on its components individual mobility’s. The advantages of the CE system compared to other separation methods are short analysis time, simple apparatus and setup, small volumes, and ease of use. These advantages and simple apparatus help make building a CE relatively quick and simple and a manageable task that is a good learning experience for upper division undergraduate chemistry students. A CE will be built and then tested using a potential analytical chemistry experiment to optimize the CE and better understand how the CE system works. The purpose of this research is for undergraduates to experience a new side of analytical chemistry and gain experience while providing a useful tool for the chemistry department.
