Aryl amides are privileged-structures in biologically-active molecules, herbicides, agrochemicals, conducting polymers, organic light-emitting diodes and other supramolecular materials. The selective conversion of unactivated aryl C-H bonds to carbon-nitrogen bonds to make aryl amides is significant for atom economy and synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). We have recently reported that a heterogenous Pd(II) multi-walled carbon nanotubes catalyst [Pd(II)/MWCNT] can be used for C-H to C-O, C-halogen and C-C bond transformations with multiple advantages over the homogenous catalysis. These advantages include the ability to recycle the catalyst and low levels of residual palladium contamination in the products. Here we report the application of the heterogeneous Pd(II)/MWCNT catalyst to O-chelation-directed intermolecular C-H activation reactions to synthesize a variety of 2-aminophenyl ketones, which are useful synthetic intermediates in pharmaceuticals.
