An experiment was designed for the second-semester organic chemsitry laboratory that investigates the regiochemical outcome in the synthesis of 5,7-disubstituted pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines. In this experiment students can work in an inquiry-based format, using analytical techniques taught in the first semester, to investigate the substitution pattern on this heterocyclic scaffold. In addition to investigating the regiochemical outcome, students are introduced to the application of carbonyl chemistry to the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds.
