Although the efficacy of the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) method has been shown in many studies in the U.S., few if any studies of POGIL have been conducted in India. VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology is an engineering college in Hyderabad, India. POGIL was implemented there in one of two sections of Chemistry of Engineering Materials taken by first-year mechanical engineering students. The unit on fuels was taught using a combination of POGIL and lecture by a foreign visiting professor (n = 49) while the non-POGIL section (n = 51) was taught by a full-time faculty member. Because pre- and post-tests showed a positive impact from the use of POGIL, during second semester in the Engineering Chemistry course the topic of corrosion was taught via a POGIL activity by two full-time faculty members to multiple sections (n = 102). These faculty members also taught the non-POGIL sections (n = 83). The pre- and post-tests showed significantly higher gains for the students in the POGIL sections as compared to those in the lecture sections, which correspond to the results found in the U.S. studies.
