The development and applications of chemosensors/nanosensors based on the optical methods (mainly colorimetric and fluorescence) for the detection of trace amount of cations and anions in various biological and environmental systems are increasingly captivating the attention of many scientists due to the several advantages such as high selectivity, sensitivity, naked-eye detectable, low detection limit, cost-effective, and on-site real monitoring without any need of sophisticated instrumentations. Recently, the functionalized fluorescent nanoclusters based on Ag, Au and Cu metals are widely applied for the sensing and bioimaging of metal ions, anions and neutral molecules. In this presentation, we have studied the cation sensing ability of the luminescent near-infrared (NIR)-emitting gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) prepared using BSA/ lysozyme as a protecting agent. The vitamin B6 cofactor pyridoxal (PL)/ pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP) was conjugated with the luminescent BSA/Lyso-AuNCs through the free amines of BSA/lysozyme and then employed for the nanomolar detection of metal ions in aqueous medium. The modified systems PL_BSA-AuNCs and PLP_Lyso-AuNCs showed selective turn-off and turn-on fluorescence in the presence of Hg2+ and Zn2+ ions, respectively. These nano-assembly were chemically adsorb on the cellulose paper strips, characterized by FT-IR, XPS, SEM and then applied for the detection of metal ions (Hg2+ and Zn2+) in water samples.
