The concerted disrotatory 6-pi electrocyclization of conjugated trienes was a key impetus for the formulation of the principal of conservation of orbital symmetry by Woodward and Hoffman in 1965. Since that time, efforts to develop transition metal accelerated 6pi-electrocyclizations of trienes have uniformly failed. Here we present computational and experimental evidence for a ruthenium-accelerated disrotatory triene electrocyclization and the first structural proof for hexahapto metal coordination to acyclic conjugated trienes (e.g. 1-meso and 1-rac).
