The reactions of (η5-C5H5)Co{η4-exo-[C(SO2Ph)=C(TMS)C(H)=C(R)CH(CO2Et)]} (R = OEt, Ph, Me, etc) with DIBAL-H (diisobutylaluminum hydride) give the hydroxymethyl analogues (η5-C5H5)Co{η4-exo-[C(SO2Ph)=C(TMS)C(H)=C(R)CH(CH2OH)]} (2) in high yield. Treatment of 2 with HBF4 results in the formal loss of the hydroxymethyl substituent from the cyclopentadiene ligand and formation of cobalticinium cations,(η5-C5H5)Co{η5-[C(SO2Ph)=C(TMS) C(H)=C(OEt)CH]}BF4 (3). Mechanistic studies on this new class of ligand fragmentation reactions will be presented.
