Mesoporous HZSM-5 zeolite microsphere (MPHZ) was synthesized by a hydrothermal synthesis with carboxymethylcellulose sodium as hard template. The sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption, Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) and Pyridine adsorption infrared (Py-IR). The results showed that pure phase ZSM-5 zeolite microsphere, which had a inter-crystal mesopore structure, could be synthesized successfully. The BET surface of MPHZ zeolite was 1.26-fold as that of the conventional HZSM-5 zeolite. The pore volume and the pore size of MPHZ zeolite were 1.4-fold higher than that of conventional HZSM-5 zeolite. The larger pore size and pore volume were in favor of the diffusion of transient macromolecule and macromolecular products. At the same time, the MPHZ zeolite contained more L acid sites and strong acid sites, and the strength of strong acid was obviously enhanced. These acid properties were benefit to increase the yield of BTX. During conversion of methanol to aromatics (MTA), the MPHZ zeolites exhibited better catalytic performances than the conventional HZSM-5 zeolite in catalytic lifetime, selectivity to BTX or the yield of liquid hydrocarbons. The conversion of methanol for MPHZ zeolite was more than 99% after 100 h and the highest selectivity to BTX for MPHZ zeolite could reach to 36.1% and maintained at 25% after 70 h. Moreover, the highest yield of liquid hydrocarbons for MPHZ zeolite is 29.64% at t=400 oC, p=0.1 MPa and WHSV=1.2 h-1.
