Amides are easily available and highly stable carbonyl compounds. These features make them excellent starting materials and synthetic intermediates for a number of useful transformations, including amide group directed C–H functionalization. After these transformations, in most cases, it is necessary to convert the amide group, which is at a high level of oxidation state, to a functionality at lower oxidation state. However, due to their high stability, available methods for the chemoselective transformation of amides into other classes of compounds such as imines, amines, and ketones, etc are generally stepwise. In 2010, we reported a method for the direct reductive bis-alkylation of amides. Since then, a number of chemoselective methods have been developed from our laboratory. In this talk, I shall focus on our own contribution to this emerging field.
