Tin phosphides (SnPx) based anodes possess suitable potential windows in pursuing ultrafast and highly reversible lithium ion storage to achieve high power/energy lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, high electric resistance and huge volume expansion hinder its further application in current electronic components. In this paper, we described a two-step strategy for synthesis of 0D SnPx/Sn nanoparticles supported on 2D reduced graphene oxide (SnPx/Sn@G). SnPx/Sn@G delivered a high reversible capacity of 1315 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and a remarkable rate capability of 857 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1 due to a synergistic Li-ion storage mechanism. In such an anode, two-dimensional graphene nanosheets provided abundant electrochemical active sites and enhanced the overall electronic conductivity. Nanostructured Sn phase may act as an electronic channel to enable electrochemical activation of the composite. SnPx can operate as a buffer component to abate the volume change during charge/discharge. Meanwhile, the composite can be partially self-healed due to strong bonding interaction between Sn and P, which successfully mitigates the accumulation of pulverization and aggregation for Sn and P. As-designed composites moderate volumetric expansions of Sn and aggregations of SnPx nanoparticles. The strategy offers a new approach to explore high capacity and cycle-stable Tin-based anodes for LIBs and other electrochemical energy storage application.
