<br/>In recent years, new materials characterized by topological invariants derived from electronic Berry phase have drawn extensive attention, owing to their fascinating electronic properties. I will begin with a hopefully intuitive exposition of the concepts of Berry phase and topological invariants associated with electrons in extended solids.  A few recent progresses in the ab initio theory of Berry phase effect in materials and the design of topological phases will then be discussed.  These examples will also illustrate how understanding of chemical bonding and symmetry can guide us in materials discovery, and help us understand some of the Berry phase related properties.<br/>
