Many academic research organizations are attempting to evaluate and advance their respective safety cultures. How does one evaluate the lab safety culture within a diverse academic research organization? What is the starting baseline? What are the critical variables? What tools can be developed to help advance the safety culture in academic research? These are many of the questions being pondered throughout higher education today. The basis of most organizations includes cultural norms that have been established historically and, at some point, change is desired to advance on a scale of expected improvement.<br/>Stanford underwent an evaluation of its laboratory safety culture and this case study identifies critical variables related to laboratory safety cultures and values, and describes a program to evaluate and advance a culture for the conduct of safe science at Stanford University. Described will be the program, baseline evaluations, process and results to date. Additionally, program information will be provided about pathways to instill and integrate a stronger safety culture throughout the entire institution and demonstrating the university’s commitment to safety as a core value at Stanford.
