A new type of electric-/thermal-responsive device based on 3D photonic crystals (PC) and chiral nematic liquid crystal (N*LC) was developed. The 3D PC was prepared by the self-assembly of PS spheres with two different sizes and exhibited an extended reflectance in the near-infrared region. Furthermore, the electric-/thermal-tunable optical properties of the composite device were investigated. It presented the photonic bandgap (PBG) of N*LC-inverse opal composite structure with electric field applied while showed the reflectance of N*LC without electric field and the electric-responsive behavior could be switched reversibly. In addition, the device exhibited gradient redshift of reflectance as the temperature increased below the clearing point (T<sub>C</sub>) of N*LC while showed the PBG of N*LC-inverse opal composite structure when the temperature was higher than T<sub>C</sub>.
