Cubic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanocage was prepared by using a multi-template and phase transfer directed method. Phase transfer of aqueous metal ions (such as Zn, Co, Cu) on the interface of cubic Cu2O template was achieved by coordinating etching and precipitating process, in which cubic morphology was preserved and hollow metal hydroxide (such as Zn(OH)2, Co(OH)2, Cu(OH)2) nanocages were obtained due to the removal of Cu2O template. Therefore, cubic MOFs nanocages could be formed by the transformation of metal hydroxide cages, which was a self-template transforming process. The former metal hydroxide nanocages will be not only the template but the metal source for the construction of MOFs as well. During the formation of metal hydroxides and MOFs, core-shell Cu2O@hydroxides and hydroxides@MOFs composites will be formed and considered as the intermediate in each stage, respectively. The whole process could also be monitored by the color changing of particles. This phase transfer directed method will offer a further development of porous metal-organic frameworks with functional hollow structure.
