Tremendous attention was paid to the levels of homocysteine(Hcy) in plasma due to elevated levels of plasma Hcy are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the existing determinations are limited by its inability to discriminate cysteine and homocysteine, let alone calculated the concentration of Hcy. The development of methods which could detect Hcy preciser remains a hot topic. The reflux reaction of CdCl2 as Cd source, NaHTe as a Te source and cysteamine(CA) as a modification produces cysteamine capped CdTe quantum dots(CA-CdTe QDs). CA-CdTe QDs as a fluorescent probe has a high selectivity toward Hcy by utilizing a fluorescence turn-on mechanism .The fluorescence of CA-CdTe QDs was intensively quenched by Cu2+ via forming non luminescent complexes of CA-CdTe-Cu2+. When Hcy was in presence, Cu2+ was taken away by Hcy via forming complexes of Hcy-Cu2+ and the fluorescence of Ca-CdTe QDs regained. The outstanding detecting activity of CA-CdTe QDs was tested in the detection of Hcy under the help of Cu2+. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the fluorescence recovery of the system was linear with the concentration of homocysteine in the range of 50 nmol/L-10 μmol/L, and the detection limit was 10nmol/L. The important factors which may affect the result, such as temperature, pH, the diameter of QDs and so on, are tested. Moreover, the application of CA-CdTe QDs as a fluorescent probe to detect Hcy in plasma are feasible.
