The organics in mature landfill leachate are mainly humic-like matters, which account for over 80% weight of the total organics and have threatened human health through the contamination of water. In this work, a kind of vegetable biomass waste-montmorillonite hydrogel (VBW-MMT hydrogel) with superabsorbent property was prepared through chemical crosslinking method in aqueous solution. The VBW-MMT hydrogel was then used as an adsorbent to remove humic acid (HA) from aqueous solution, and the effects of pH, hydrogel dosage, and initial HA concentration were investigated. The results showed that the maximum removal efficiencies of hydrogel samples for HA solutions with concentration of 200 mg/L<sup> </sup>was 86.9% at pH 6.0-8.0, and the experimental adsorption isotherm data was fitted to the Langmuir model. In addition, a bench-scale experiment was utilized to investigate the effects of VBW-MMT hydrogel on the performance of mature landfill leachate, and the 3D EEM was applied to characterize the variation of dissolved organic matters (DOM). It indicated that the fluorescence intensity of humic acid decreased by 45.2% after treatment with VBW-MMT hydrogel. All the promising results manifested that the VBW-MMT hydrogel was an effective adsorbent for removal of HA and provided a new platform for reuse vegetable biomass waste.
