Silver nanomaterials in consumer products have a wide range of applications depending on the structure of the silver and the material to which it is added, ranging from use in water purification, medical devices and electronic displays. Incorporation of silver nanomaterials into textiles is predominantly to take advantage of their antimicrobial properties which is useful in products such as socks, athletic apparel and wound dressings. To assess the use of these materials over their lifetime, it is important have access to validated materials and measurement methods to accurately identify any pertinent modifications. Therefore, this presentation will focus on the development and application of methodologies to create silver nanoparticle loaded textile controls as well as characterize them for physical and chemical properties. First, an approach to developing silver nanoparticles textile controls will be presented. Results from this study will demonstrate a one pot approach to loading silver nanoparticles onto cotton threads in a controllable fashion based on starting material concentration. Characterization of the final product by various forms of spectroscopy and microscopy will be presented. Secondly, this approach was applied to a variety of different textiles, including cotton, nylon, polyester and wool to demonstrate the applicability of this sample preparation method to a variety of textiles. Findings have revealed a substrate dependence which will be discussed. Additionally, an approach will be described for high throughput particle sizing using freely available software which was employed for these fabrics. Lastly, results from an ongoing study on transformations of nano-silver loaded textiles (both prepared in-house and purchased commercially) due to exposure to environmentally and biologically relevant media consistent with what would be expected during and after use will be presented.
