In addition to providing a high-surface-area support for metal catalysts, functional metal oxides can also be catalyst promoters. However, many of the most interesting functional oxides have low surface areas that decrease with time. In this work, we demonstrate the use of Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) to prepare a range of thin films of active oxides, including LaFeO3, CeZrO4, CeO2, and Fe2O3 on high-surface-area substrates. When ALD is performed in a static mode, the oxides and mixed oxides deposit as conformal, dense films that uniformly cover the substrate. Perovskites and ceria-zirconia solid solutions are easily formed at low temperatures. Metals supported on these composite supports exhibit catalytic properties similar to that observed with metals on the bulk oxides, but with much better thermal stability.
