Concerns generated by the increasing levels of CO2 production provide a strong impetus to discover new catalysts that are able to convert CO2 (i.e. chemical reduction) into other more valuable compounds. Our goals are to design new catalysts that have high efficiency for the reduction of CO2 and to characterize these catalysts with a focus on their electro- and photophysical properties. Associated with this effort is a desire to more clearly reveal the role of supporting ligands on the reactivity of these complexes. Rhenium (I) complexes with α-diimine-based ligands are among the most efficient and simple catalysts that reduce CO2. In this poster, our exploration of the ligand frameworks with a wider variety of heteroatom binding sites and an effort to use Mn(I) in place of Re will be presented. For instance, some transition metal complexes supported by pyridine-centered “SNS” (e.g. 2,6-(RSCH2)2NC5H3) and “PNP” (e.g. [2,6-{Ph2PNMe}2NC5H3) ligand scaffolds have been synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical and photochemical features of these species with the target of CO2 reduction will be presented.
