<i>Operando</i> solid-state NMR spectroscopy involving by selectively <sup>13</sup>C-labeled oxygenates such as carbohydrates and aryl ethers, in conjunction with ex situ adsorption and calorimetric measurements, has been used to shed light on differences in composition and conformation that promote or inhibit catalytic transformations at solid-liquid interfaces. Depending on the hydrophobicity of the catalyst pore surface, the presence of organic co-solvents can dramatically change the structure and dynamics of interfacial water, thereby modifying reaction pathways and rates. This talk will describe direct observations of these phenomena using recently developed mini-autoclave NMR rotors.
