There is a need for structurally simple NIR emitting fluorophores for biomedicinal applications. NIR fluorophores have absorption and emission between 700 nm and 900 nm, and therefore they can be used, for example, in deep tissue fluorescence imaging. BODIPY derivatives are easily available, neutral fluorophores, and are absorbing and emitting in the visible range. One of the strategies to shift absorption and emission of BODIPY towards longer wavelength is installation of styryl substituents. However, most of the distyryl BODIPY derivatives absorb and emit around 650 nm. We hypothesized that by replacing a phenyl ring in a styryl substituent with an electron rich pyrrole moiety, we can further shift the absorbance and emission in the resulting 2-(pyrrole-2-yl)vinyl-substituted BODIPY to 700 nm. Herein, we will present a synthesis and optical properties of a set of 2-(pyrrole-2-yl)vinyl-substituted BODIPY derivatives with an emission &gt; 700 nm.
