Managing data, particularly in the sciences, is a daunting task for many undergraduates, graduates, and post-docs. Many young researchers are unfamiliar with how to approach file-naming conventions, file storage, or the sharing of public data. With the requirement of a data management plan being implemented as a part of the application for federally-funded research grants, having the skills to organize and manage data is becoming increasingly important. These data management skills become relevant in both industry and academia as young chemists enter a world full of data and research products, and the ability to manage these complex parts is a skill that is valued by employers in many fields. Young researchers are particularly aware of the need to share data (particularly in the terms of grant requirements), but have been found the least likely to do so.<br/><br/>This presentation will discuss the basic knowledge requirements for young chemists who need to manage data or construct plans to do so and will demonstrate how it is possible to fill the gaps in knowledge that lead to a lack of data management or data sharing among young researchers by partnering with the library and research offices on campus. High-impact practices for teaching undergraduates, graduates, and post-docs about data management will be shared in addition to resources for teaching data management skills. An explanation of how to incorporate data management trainings into research labs or courses will be provided.  Throughout the presentation effective strategies for teaching data management skills and planning will be modeled.
