This presentation will discuss the experimental in situ measurement of the liquid-solid interface for a lithium ion battery using neutron reflectometry.  Specific emphasis will be placed on the very initial stages of the solid electrolyte interphase growth.  The results show the formation of a condensed layer at the interface that is lithium rich that are about 5 nm thick.  This is far larger than a double layer and suggests a new description of the Li-ion battery-electrolyte interactions are required.
