The merging of organic fluorophores and transition metals yields novel materials with useful unique optical properties. Hydroporphyrins are good organic building blocks for such materials due to their good fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF), good photostability, ability to photosensitize singlet oxygen (ΦΔ) and unique narrow absorption and emission bands in the near-infrared spectral window (650-900 nm). We hypothesize that merging hydroporphyrins with metals such as palladium and platinum will yield novel materials with useful optical properties. Herein, we present the synthesis of organometallic hydroporphyrins containing either i) carbon metal bonds ii) metal coordinated to the central nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle iii) metal coordinated at the periphery of the macrocycle. The photophysical properties such as absorption and emission, singlet oxygen production, and lifetimes are also presented.
