The need to develop synthetic strategies to access new classes of functional materials as well as to understand fundamental structure-property relationships within these new materials is essential to the growth of inorganic and materials chemistry research. Bismuth and bismuth-based compounds demonstrate attractive material properties, being inexpensive and nontoxic with high stability and interesting luminescent and catalytic behavior. This has prompted the use of bismuth-based compounds in applications from pharmaceuticals to photocatalysts to solid state materials. Synthetic avenues, however, to access bismuth-based compounds can be challenging, in part, due to the limited solubility of bismuth salts and the hydrolytic instability of bismuth. We have thus been examining various synthetic routes towards bismuth(III)-thiophenecarboxylate compounds and their lanthanide-doped analogs to achieve a more directed approach for developing photoluminescent materials. Furthermore, to increase our understanding of bismuth coordination chemistry and the resulting photophysical properties of the end product, we are examining the solid state structural chemistry and spectroscopic behavior of the synthesized materials. Herein, we present the synthesis and structural characterization of several bismuth(III)-organic materials, as well as their photoluminescent properties.
