Complex metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) with multiple components in highly ordered structures promise sophisticated functionalities, tunable properties and advanced applications. The complexity of these multi-component MOFs are limited ultimately by the lack of control during the framework assembly. In this presentation, we demonstrate that multi-component MOFs can be constructed in a predictable and stepwise manner guided by simple kinetic considerations. This synthetic strategy conceptually mimics the total synthesis approach used by chemists to construct complex organic molecules. As a proof of concept, four multi-component MOFs were constructed by sequential incorporation of organic linkers and inorganic building units within a scaffold-MOF. Furthermore, we show that the synthetic strategy affords the construction of a cooperative bimetallic catalytic system with two collaborative metal sites for the one-pot, three-component Strecker reactions.
