Selecting the proper type of chemical fume hoods for laboratories can be a complex process. Among many aspects that must be well understood by the design team, before making the final fume hood selection, is what the hoods will be used for and by whom. This session will explain when it is appropriate to use either ductless enclosures or filtered fume hoods and the positive impact these technologies can have on infrastructure reductions, energy savings, flexibility and sustainability.<br/>Safe use of, and the limitations inherent with, carbon-based chemical filtration will also be discussed as this technology is not universally understood. New product improvements that increase awareness of filtration status, both locally and remotely, plus advances in filtration capability and capacity help minimize risk.<br/>Proper operational protocols must be understood by users for continued safe use of ductless and filtered fume hoods. Case studies from industry and academia will be presented of how some leading institutions have integrated this technology into their lab culture, whether private, public, research or institutional learning spaces.
