Cadmium has become a capstone metal in the development of coordination polymers for material applications. We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of cadmium chloride complexes with linear pentadentate ligands. These complexes display varying dimensionality, comprising a true molecular complex, a chloride-bridged one-dimensional polymeric complex, and a ligand-bridged helical one-dimensional coordination polymer. Synthetic challenges, as well as differences in ligand topology, metal coordination number and luminescent behavior will be discussed.
