(Photo)electrochemical cells that facilitate water splitting are promising renewable energy platforms for the production of clean-burning hydrogen fuel. Central to the function of these devices are electrocatalysts capable of oxidizing water at the anode (oxygen evolution reaction, OER) and reducing protons at the cathode (hydrogen evolution reaction, HER). These catalysts should be composed of Earth-abundant elements and should function efficiently for long periods of time under operational conditions. Earth-abundant water oxidation electrocatalysts for use in neutral and alkaline conditions are well known, as are electrocatalysts for proton reduction in highly acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions. Earth-abundant catalysts for the OER in highly acidic solution, however, are rare. This presentation will describe our latest results on the discovery and characterization of electrochemically-active catalysts for water oxidation under highly acidic conditions. <br/>
