Paramagnetic transition metal complexes are attractive candidates for the implementation of electronic spin-based quantum computation. The inherent tunability of their electronic configurations afforded by their versatile ligand fields render them attractive platforms upon which to explore the potential to scale of the smallest unit of information processing, a qubit. Their promise stems from the manifold of spin states generated by the zero-field splitting parameters (D and E) in S &gt; 1/2 ground states, which are susceptible to interrogation and manipulation using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Toward this end, we have commenced an investigation of transition metal complexes that offer the potential to display multiple addressable transitions within the ground state spin of the complex. Throughout these studies, we have explored the two extremes of rhombicity (E/D) in two mononuclear transition metal complexes, [Co(C3S5)2]2− and [Cr(C3S5)3]3−, and investigated their rich spin physics. The results of these studies demonstrate the disparity in design principles for targeting complexes that display slow magnetic relaxation, for application in classical information processing, and those suited for targeting multiple addressable qubits for application as molecular qubit hosts.
