Dirhodium paddlewheel complexes have long been an active area of study for their tunable excited state properties and variable ligand architecture. Their applications range from sensitizing dyes, to cross-coupling catalysts, to CO2 and H+ reduction electrocatalysts. In order to add more control and functionality into this molecular design, new ligands have been synthesized to incorporate a third metal covalently linked to the Rh2 core. These ligands are built off of the 1,8-naphthyridine moiety and have nitrogen based cheating groups for the attachment of the third metal. The modularity of the nitrogen chelating group (imine, amine, and amide) allows for a variety of metals with differing chemistries. All new compounds have been analyzed by 1H NMR spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, as well as cyclic voltammetry and steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopies. This work has been accompanied by density functional theory calculations which were instructive predictors of which metal atoms would result in beneficial orbital overlap and potential for catalytic activity.
