Platinum(II) complexes bearing cyclometalating fragments in concert with pyrazolate, mercaptopyridine, or hydroxypyridine bridging ligands produce low energy metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions in the visible with corresponding long-lived RT photoluminescence. As the HOMO in these chromophores is formally σ* resulting from dz2 overlap between the two PtII centers, charge transfer excitation results in the formation of a partial σ-bond. This excited state bond formation has been investigated using both transient X-ray absorption and transient UV-Vis spectroscopy. The ground state behavior of these molecules has been recently investigated using electrochemistry and Raman spectroscopy has been employed to elucidate the totally symmetric Pt-Pt stretching vibration. More recent work has focused on excited state electron and energy transfer phenomena using this chromophore platform and recent results will be discussed. Finally, the ultrafast dynamics of these chromophores probed in the UV, Vis, and near-IR along with conventional static and dynamic luminescence will be described.
