Protein crystal structures are an integral part of pharma research providing critical insight to the function of biologically important molecules as well as a 3-dimensional approach to modulation of proteins involved in disease. Industrial and academic researchers are teaming up to improve the efficiency and rate of production of protein structures as well as increase the amount of data available to the public. On the technology side, we will discuss MARCO (MAchine Recognition of Crystallization Outcomes), a collaborative effort to develop efficient computational algorithms to recognize protein crystallization outcomes from experimental images along with efforts to enhance our collective capability in cryo-electron microscopy. On the data sharing side, we will discuss efforts to provide protein structures for SAR sets compiled for both the D3R initiative and PKIS (Protein Kinase Inhibitor Set) as well as our emerging initiative under the Pistoia Alliance to close the gap in predictive modelling for antibody research by improving the breadth and depth of available antibody 3D structures.
