It is well known that natural and engineered heme-proteins react with diazo compounds to perform cyclopropanation, N-H and S-H insertion and in some cases aziridination.  Although the substrate scope for these reactions has been well documented, mechanistic studies are limited.  This study investigates the spectral species formed when natural heme-proteins react with diazo compounds and their kinetic properties.  At least one active intermediate has been identified and the mechanistic insights were used to optimize reactivity and to formulate a proposed mechanism.<br/>
